Citrine is a variety of quartz ranging in colors of yellow, yellow-brown, orange, dark orange-brown, reddish-brown. Darker colors are considered more valuable, including the medium golden orange and dark sherry-colors. With a 7.0 hardness on the Mohs scale, it is a solid gemstone resistant to scratches.
Major color classifications of Citrine include Champagne (light bronze), Lemon Yellow (bright and light yellow), and Madiera (darker pumpkin to sherry color). Citrine crystals can form together with amethyst or smoky quartz to form a bi-colored quartz called ametrine.
Most citrine comes from Brazil, but can also be found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, in Dauphine, France, and in Madagascar.
Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name golden topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although, in fact, it has very little in common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz - except for a few nuances of color. Thus the history of the citrine is closely interwoven with that of the topaz.
It is said to have been one of the stones in the Breastplate of the High Priest and is further associated with the Hebrew tribe of Naphtali.
Citrine has become know as "The Merchant's Stone." It is said that by placing a crystal of Citrine in the cash box, merchants have been able to not only acquire more wealth, but maintain it as well.
Citrine is also effective in activating, clearing and balancing all chakra levels. It is also excellent for aura cleansing.
